When I turned 18, I had to make a strict budget for myself since I was living without parents. I had a lot of responsibility at 18 years old and had to make for everything by myself.
I have a budget to control my spending.
I was working full-time and although I didn’t go to school immediately, I made good use of my time. If I didn’t set a budget at this age, I would’ve been spending money left and right and would’ve never had the ability to pay off my bills or pay off certain expenses.
With a budget, I was able to pay off certifications and gain credentials that would help my resume. I earned a TEFL certification which allowed me to teach English in pretty much any country in the world. I also received my Certified Personal Training certification which allows me to be a trainer at most gyms. I also have my Fitness Nutrition Specialist certification which helped me learn a ton about nutrition.
What would I have done without a budget?
Well, I would’ve blown all of my money on clothes and materialistic items most likely. When I have something written down and easy to see, I get a better idea of how much I need to save. I remember the days when I didn’t have a budget and I would spend WAY too much money on paydays.
I use the Mint app to help me budget all of my expenses. I love this app because it connects to my bank account and allows me to see everything I am spending money on. There are all different types of groups for spending. For example, if you go to McDonalds, what you spent will show up in the restaurant/food section. If you don’t have this app already, please get it! It helps tremendously on saving money and really opened my eyes to how much money I was spending on food and clothing. It all adds up much quicker than you would think.
I do love to go shopping and out to eat, so I don’t deprive myself of going. Instead, I budget these expenses in and make it work.
I make sure to set aside a certain amount of money each month for ‘fun’.
If my budget is tight and I can’t really spend much on these things, I’ll do something to make quick money such as: Selling my clothes or other items to a thrift store or Craigslist.
I have so many items that are actually worth a good chunk, so Craigslist has become my best friend!
I also use Care.com to pick up quick one time jobs for babysitting. Parents love to go out on dates where I live! There are so many jobs to choose from and I am easily picking up jobs whenever I feel like working on the weekends.
