Recently at my college we discussed whether or not we believed we were addicted to our cell phones.
We are now living in a generation where we thrive off of electronics and cell phones are items that a majority of America has.
I’ve seen kids as young as 6 years old with cell phones, and it blows my mind away because I didn’t get mine until I was 14, and I still believe that was a bit young! I’m not sure when I will allow my kids to have cell phones, but it won’t be at least until high school.
I have tried to limit my cell phone usage in the past, and I think I have greatly benefited from the actions below:
1. Use an old cell phone.
Transfer your simcard to a different phone, preferably from the beginning of the 2000’s. My iPhone recently shattered (what a surprise I know) and I had to get a new phone.
I had a bunch of old phones lying around and I began to ask myself, do I necessarily need to buy a new phone? The new cell phones were costing upwards of around $500 and that was mind blowing to me. So what did I do? I had the AT&T store put my current simcard into an old phone.
All you could do on this phone was text ( and not with a keyboard might I add ) and you could take photos, but obviously they weren’t good quality photos.
But guess what?
I was NEVER on my phone.
Seriously. I didn’t even text people anymore, I just called them or spoke to them when we were supposed to hang out. It was the best time of my life because I was never on my phone and I was actually experiencing LIFE!

2. Immerse yourself into new, interesting hobbies that will keep your attention.
There have been times when I solely focused on school and work and it was BORING. I kept forgetting to take care of myself by doing things that made me happy.
Instead, I would just waste time on my phone and spend time on different apps, when I could have instead spent time on adventures and exploring the world around me. My fun time was spent on my phone rather than what is truly important, spending time doing mentally and physically stimulating activities.
Although I’ve laid out the cons of having a brand new cell phone, there are plenty of pros to it. I’m able to take tons of pretty good quality photos whenever I want to. I get to text people whenever I want and it’s pretty easy to keep in touch with long distance friends. I recently downloaded an app that is all about trivia, and it’s a lot of fun! I decided to only keep apps that were mentally stimulating but fun at the same time. Trivia Crack is where its at!
Did you find any of these tips helpful? Do you think you are addicted to your cell phone?
