I’m not expert solo traveler, but I have gone to a few vacation destinations by myself. I have also met a good amount of solo travelers when I’ve been on vacation, and they usually have the best stories and they are usually the most fun type of people to be around.
Here are my five tips for traveling solo:
1. Be safe.
If you are traveling by yourself, you should try to be as confident as you can. Know where you are going before you actually leave. Carry only what you need so that if something does happen, you don’t miss the items that you may lose or that may get stolen. Don’t flash any expensive items in areas where that is not the norm.
If you do end up getting lost, then this is especially when you need to be confident. Don’t act like you are lost if you feel unsafe in an area. Carry your head up high, keep your cool, and try to figure it out. If you need to ask someone for directions, try to find the best person you can. If you are a solo female, then asking a group of 5 men in a dark alley is DEFINITELY not a good idea at all.
2. Tell people where you are going.
If you are traveling alone, then you should always let someone back at home know where you are going. You might tell your parents, your friends, etc. so that if something were to happen to you that they can find you.
3. Get to your hotel during the daytime.
There are many flights in the very early morning (I’m talking like 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.) where you can get a great deal on a flight. However, if you are traveling alone, then this might not be the best time for you to arrive to a completely new place where you are not an expert.
This way you can find a safe form of transportation to your accommodation choice, you can unpack, and you can learn about the area while feeling a little bit more safely.
4. Say no when needed.
When you are traveling by yourself, it can be easy to get tangled into a conversation that you don’t want to be in. Whether it be from an unwanted suitor, or maybe it’s a salesperson. Whoever it may be, don’t hesitate to say no when you are starting to feel uncomfortable. Say no, be polite, and walk away.
5. Have fun!
Lastly, have fun on your trip! Traveling by yourself is a great thing. If I scared you above at all, do not worry. A lot of the same rules above apply to group traveling as well. You just have to be a little bit more careful because you will be by yourself.
Make some great friends, travel to awesome destinations, and make a trip of a lifetime for yourself.
Would you ever travel by yourself? Why or why not?
