Have you ever considered that if you are unhappy in your life that you could begin to redirect your thoughts and choose happiness instead? This is not something that I came up with on my own, but over the past year I’ve been doing a lot of reading, studying and growing spiritually and this is one of the themes that I’ve been coming across in a lot of what I’m reading is that we can just simply shift our thoughts from those of anxiety and unhappiness to thoughts that make us feel good and well…happy!
It sounds so simple and I know as you are reading this you are probably coming up with all the reasons why doing something this simple will NOT work for you. I did the same thing when I first read about this. “It just won’t work” I told myself. There is no way I can be happy until _______ happens so until then I will just have to learn how to live with the unhappiness.
Only when we allow others to be who they are, rather than what we want them to be, will we have peaceful relationships – Headspace Mindful Moment
But something kept sticking with me about the easiness of changing my thoughts and just deciding to be happy so one day I decided to give it a try. For me, my drive time to work seems to be when my anxiety and over analyzing comes up. I start thinking about something small and then before I know it I’ve somehow ended up going down this path of turning that one small negative thought into a complete disaster.
For some reason, I find comfort in that worry and anxiety, like if I don’t worry or get anxious about something then I’m going to be caught off guard when something bad happens. It’s no secret that we get what we focus on in lifeClick To Tweet
It’s no secret that we get what we focus on in life so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when the negative thing comes true!!
Over the past few months I’ve really been working on focusing on thoughts that make me feel good rather than letting myself go down the path of worry and anxiety and feeling bad. Here’s how I’ve managed to do that:
- I started small. Since I have conditioned myself to worry and feel anxious, I started out just thinking good thoughts for 10-15 minutes at a time. After that, if I chose to, I would let myself go back to the worry and fear and at first this is what I did. But then an amazing thing started happening. I allowed myself to let go of the worry the fear and the anxiety and nothing bad happened when I was feeling good. It was no surprise I wanted to feel that way more!
- I became aware of my thoughts. I noticed when I was starting to have negative thoughts come back up in my mind and I instantly shifted my thoughts to something more positive. It helps to know what makes you feel good so if you are not sure of this, make a list of what makes you happy. This can be anything from music, to art to talking to your best friend. Whatever it is, knowing what makes you happy makes it easier to shift out of a negative mindset
- I looked for the good. It’s easy for most of us to find the fault in things and one thing I’ve been focusing on is looking for the good in things where I would normally find only the negative. This is not easy at first, but once you start to do this you will notice there is a relief in looking for and feeling good the majority of the time.
I don’t know what your situation is as you are reading this and for some of you choosing to feel happy might seem completely out of the question right now. And that’s ok, you don’t have to do it. Put this article aside and come back to it later.
What I do know is everything in life happens for a reason and if we can learn to look for the good, it makes our journey a lot smoother and easier on ourselves. We no longer struggle or resist what is happening to us. We may not agree with it, but we can lighten our load by looking for the positive in any situation.
Happiness is a key element of designing a life you love, why not give it a try?
So how about it, how would your life change if you choose to be happy right now, no matter where you are?
