Join us us for #jpchat to Learn About Filing Taxes online with One Price Taxes

Now that things have finally settled down after the new year, it’s time to bring back The Jenny Pincher tweetchat! This week’s chat will be held Sunday January 29th at 7 pm CST. I’m going to have a special guest, Robbie Edwards from One Price Taxes join us to answer all your questions about filing your taxes online!

If you’ve never participated in a tweetchat, here is some information to get the most out of it:

The Basics:

Here’s the basic info you need to know about participating in a Tweet chat from (Manta.com):

  1. To participate  in a Tweet chat, you must be a Twitter user. If you aren’t a Twitter user, sign  up at www.twitter.com.
  2. Tweet chats use hashtags. A hashtag is a way to track a specific topic or event on Twitter. Hashtags  begin with the hashmark (or pound) symbol (#) and incorporate a word or series of words with no spaces. Examples of hashtags are #smallbusiness,  #smb, etc. In the case of our tweetchat, the hashtag is #jpchat.
  3. Tweet chats are  scheduled on specific days and times.
  4. Tweet chats are  run by moderators who keep the conversation moving forward. In the typical  tweet chat, a moderator asks questions for the group to answer during  the chat. For this chat, the Twitter handle @thejennypincher will be the moderator.
  5. Tweet chats  thrive on conversation. In order to get the most from a chat, one must participate!

How to Participate:

  1. At the scheduled chat time, log onto www.tweetchat.com (or use tweetdeck, hootsuite or your favorite twitter tool) using your twitter name and password. Enter the hashtag at the top of the screen. Our chat is on Sunday January 29th  at 7 pm CST and the hashtag is #jpchat. It will last approximately 1 hour.
  2. I will be moderating the chat and asking Robbie from One Price Taxes the questions. My twitter id is @thejennypincher and Robbie’s is @OnePriceTaxes. I will begin by asking Robbie questions. Each question will have Q1, Q2, Q3 etc. in front of it so you can easily find the question. At the end, I will place the hashtag #jpchat. So the first question will look something like this: Q1 – WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR #jpchat. Obviously that isn’t going to be one of the questions, but you get the idea what to look for.
  3. When Robbie answers, he will put the question number with his answer. For example:A1 – My favorite color is Blue & Purple – depending on my mood!  #jpchat.
  4. You can participating by asking Robbie more questions and/or commenting on his answers. It’s going to be a great chat and a great way to learn more about filing taxes online!
  5. Don’t forget to add the hashtag #jpchat at the end of your tweets so you stay in the conversation! If you are using Tweetchat, this will automatically add the hashtag for you.
  6. Be you! Now is the time to ask questions and give your input (as long as they are on topic).
  7. This tweetchat is meant to be informative and fun. We are planning to do a giveaway on the chat so you will definitely want to be included in that!

The Best of the Frugality Gone Bad Tweetchat #jpchat

We had a wonderful tweetchat tonight! In case you are not familiar with what a tweetchat is and how it works, you can read about it here. Tonight’s topic was frugality gone bad – which was basically share your story about how you were trying to be frugal and it backfired on you! Here are some highlights from the chat:

Probably the best response to that question was:

And then the response to that was priceless:

From there we went on to discuss our favorite frugal tips. Some of those tips include:

I think the comment that topped the night was as follows. @STLSocialGroup provided this great tip:

and then out of no where, @Kevin_Hebert provided this awesome comment to that:

LOL I’m still laughing about that! In case you don’t know what Peggy means, he is referring to the Capitol One credit card commercial where the guy answers the phone as “Peggy”.

We Had an Awesome #JPCHAT Tweetchat on Sunday Night!

On Sunday, I hosted my first ever Tweetchat. If you have never participated in a tweetchat, they are a lot of fun! To tell you the truth, I was a little worried no one would show up. But we had a great turn out and it went a lot faster than I expected.  I only got to ask four questions in the hour!

Here are some highlights from the #jpchat tweetchat:

Q1 revolved around women and retirement. I set the chat up with some statistics:

  • 38% of women 30-55 yrs old are worried they will live at or near poverty level because they cannot adequately save for retirement
  • 54% of women have little to no money left to save for retirement once they pay their bills
  • Women routinely don’t save enough to survive on when they become widows –which 50% of us will be by the age of 60
Then I asked if the #jpchat’ers felt like they were adequetly saving for retirement. Here were some of the responses:

Woohoo I love to hear when people are saving monthly. The next response got us into a really good debate:

So what do you do when you have debt? Do you pay that off first and then start saving or do you try to do both at the same time? I don’t know if I really have a good answer for this because I think it depends on the situation. I mean if you have debt that is going to take 10 years to payoff, you don’t want to wait 10 years to start saving! You also don’t want to miss the power of compounding interest or any match your employer might give you in a 401K.  Every situation is different but a few suggestions if you are in this situation:

  • Work to get an emergency fund first and foremost. Aim for $1,000 minimum but I realistically think it should be closer to $2,000. The point of this is to have “fallback” money so when (not if – when) you have something unexpected, you don’t have to use credit to pay for it.
  • After your emergency fund is established, consider your options with your 401k. If your employer will match, try to contribute what you can to get that match. If it is completely unrealistic for you to do, put aside as little as 1% and then work towards paying off your debt.
  • Once your debt is paid off, contribute the maximum you can to your retirement.
I know this tips are vague and won’t always apply but just do the best thing for your situation. Only you can decide that.

Another good point that was brought up was regarding empowering ourselves to take control of our finances:

So totally true!!! This is one of the missions I have with this website. I want women to be empowered about their financial future and not be afraid to take control.

Q2 revolved around budgeting. I asked the group if they kept a budget and how they kept on track. Many people use Mint to keep track of their finances. But it seemed like just as many people liked to create their own spreadsheets and graphs. Visuals are very helpful when it comes to finances. Numbers are numbers but when you see the impact they have, it can be a real wake up call. One of my favorite responses around this topic and how to stay on track with a budget was:

How awesome is that! Can you imagine the impact a visual has on your spending habits if you see it every time you open your wallet? I am definitely going to be trying that. It seems like such a simple but powerful solution.

Q3 was on the topic of salaries – how statistically women make less than men. I pointed that out and asked the group if they would ask for a raise if they knew they deserved it? There were a lot of mixed reviews about this:

I think that is a really tough thing to deal with. One because we are in a crappy economy (Carrie at CarefulCents recently wrote an article on how to ask for a raise during a recession)  and two, it’s just not in our nature as women. We tend to want to settle for less because it’s easier.

For Q4, I felt like we were on a role so I just left it open for anyone to bring up any last minute topics or ask any questions. We had a few discussions at the end about our grocery bills and how much we should spend (I think I spend too much). All in all I think it was hugely successful!

The next #jpchat is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 30th from 7-8pm CST. Mark your calendars now so you don’t forget! And if you would like to know how to participate, you can find the details here. Thanks for making the first #jpchat a huge success!
