We’ve all been there—soaring high after reaching a goal we set, only to find ourselves back in the same spot a while later, having to start all over again. Sabotaging our success usually happens subtly. It’s the little, everyday decisions that take us toward our goals, or away from them. In fact, it’s these small, daily decisions that shape our lives.
How do we end the sabotage? It ends when you decide it ends. It ends when you realize success is a journey, not a destination. If you stop growing, reaching and achieving you’re failing yourself.
New, or more, information is not necessarily what you need. You need a new plan of action. It’s time to create new choices, habits and behaviors that orientate yourself away from sabotage, and toward success.
How do you do that? You install good habits—one habit at a time. Leadership expert John C. Maxwell says, “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”
SET YOURSELF UP TO SUCCEED
Any new goal has to fit within your current lifestyle. Want to lose weight? Great: but if your gym is a one-hour commute each way is that really going to work? So, be realistic about how you will achieve your new behavior. The key is staying aware. If you really want to move forward with a new habit, make sure you pay attention to it at least once a day. Make the small steps that you can focus, and achieve, daily.
THINK ADDITION NOT SUBTRACTION
This was a game changer for me. Focus on what you’re accomplishing instead of what you’re eliminating. Removing anything from your life—bad foods, excessive bills, expensive habits—can focus your mindset on “deprivation.” Don’t focus on what you can’t have: focus on what you CAN have. Fill your mind with what you get to “add into” your life now that the wasteful habit has been eliminated. Not watching 3 hours of wasteful TV a night now that you’ve cut that cable bill? Focus instead on the 3 new hours that have been added to your calendar—that’s 21 new hours in a week! Imagine the riches you can reap with that amount of time!
Announce your new habit to the world. Have 200 friends on Facebook? Tell them your new plan–nothing like a little peer pressure to keep you honest and accountable. It will also help remind you it’s the daily steps that matter—that add up over time to make a big difference.
GET A SUCCESS BUDDY
Find another person is who is also committed to changing their life for the better Nothing is more powerful than two people locked in step to obtaining life-changing goals. Checking in with your success buddy once/week will help keep you both on track. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Our new habits need to last a lifetime. That can be daunting until you realize that you and your success buddy just have to face one day at a time, one week at a time. Your success buddy will help keep you focused when focusing isn’t so fun or easy. And if you’ve fallen off the wagon no one is more motivating that a true friend committed to keeping you on course.
There are victories in your everyday life, now celebrate them. So you want to have a million dollars in your investment portfolio? How about taking the time to celebrate the $10/month you just shaved off of your phone bill? That’s $120/year! Take a moment and praise yourself for everything that you are doing, currently, to get you toward your goal. Lifestyle changes shouldn’t be too drastic or they’ll be hard to maintain. As such, every small victory should be celebrated over you’ll never recognize that the seemingly small and, sometimes mundane work, is what’s actually getting you closer and closer to your Million Dollar Goal. GREAT JOB! Celebrate each victory.
Learning new habits can be hard so be patient with yourself. You will have setbacks. However, if you follow the steps above those setbacks will be fewer and fewer between. When you stop giving attention to your bad habit, and start focusing attention on your good habits the momentum will grow making it easier and easier everyday to get the life you’ve always wanted and deserved!
When you press on you will receive huge payoffs!
